From 1916 to 1918 French and American forces cooperated to run a Naval Aeronautical Warships base in St. Viaud, allowing thousands of soldiers to land at St. Nazaire during the war.

Today the site is commemorated with French and American flags, as well as some well worn displays explaining the operations (in French).
